Every time I’d been there, I’d felt happier, more alive, and I hoped that by speaking another language I would become another person for a while, one whose heart was whole. But when I reached Florence, I realized my sorrow had followed me. I walked aimlessly, unmoved by the ice-cream-colored Duomo, flirtatious waiters or the view from the Boboli Gardens; I had no appetite for fried artichokes or gelato.

I left for the island of Ischia, expecting to wait out the days, until my return flight, in a dark pensione or on a rocky beach. At breakfast the first morning, I noticed a man with chestnut curls and a beaked nose dining alone. When I asked the waitress a question about the island, he joined our conversation. Soon we were heading out together, and slipping seamlessly from the formal “Lei” to the intimate “tu.”

He was a professor of the philosophy of aesthetics from Paris, a dozen years older than me, married with two boys. He spoke little English; I spoke even less French. So for the next three days, we talked in uncomplicated Italian. After all the hours I’d spent dissecting the emotions of my failed marriage, it was a relief to simply enjoy the swordfish, the sunset, the view. We ate, made love, swam, and when we finished, he said, “Let’s do it all over again.”

We parted on the fourth day at the train station in Naples, with me memorizing his face, feeling bereft and hopeful. I was sure I would never see him again but I was happy that he had managed to make me feel desired, to realize that however long it might take to mend my heart, there was a world of pleasure and conversation and moonlit swims awaiting me.

One chilly day that winter, at home, while I was in the midst of moving out of my husband’s house and refiguring my finances, a postcard arrived from Paris. “I couldn’t forget,” the Professor wrote. And neither could I.

That spring, we met in Milan. Six months later, we met in London, and the next fall he flew to San Francisco. Over the next three years, we met in Turin, Morocco and Mexico, immersing ourselves in the food, the art — whatever was beautiful and sensual. Always keeping things simple and speaking Italian.

He remained married, and I had other boyfriends between our rendezvous, so we were each other’s secret, sometime lovers. I had no expectations — though I did fantasize that someday we’d be more permanently together, and even took classes in French. Friends thought my relationship with him was folly, a certain train wreck; for a newly single woman who’d been stung by betrayal, nothing good could come from a periodic liaison with a married man.

Yet for those years of slow healing, our unconventional relationship brought me pure, uncomplicated pleasure. The Professor was scrupulous in not making promises, but at the same time I knew he would always stitch in and out of my life, and that this stitching was slowly mending my heart. Whenever we’d part, he’d always say, as the Italians do, “Ci vediamo.” We’ll see each other.

On our third trip, in London, when we were walking past a cemetery, I had the dark thought that if something ever happened to him, I’d never know. When I asked if he’d let someone know about me, to contact me, he reacted in mock horror. “My dear, I’m not that old,” he said, and indeed he was just 50. But he promised.

On our last trip, in Oaxaca, Mexico, six years ago, the Professor was brimming with a new secret. He and his wife had finally divorced, and he had found someone he wanted to live with. He had always been the rogue, while I’d always pined for another long-term relationship. Now he wanted to settle down. He caressed my back.

“I can’t be both your lover and the friend you tell about the women in your life,” I said.

He shrugged with his usual equanimity. No longer lovers, we spent our days eating spicy moles, wandering around markets, climbing ruins.
http://www.nytimes.com

Is the Husband Going to Be a Problem?

I FIRST met Brendon at a student watering hole called the Dutch Goose. The name — at least the part about going halves-ies — would prove prophetic, as we turned out to be equals in so many ways. We were both Ph.D. students in the humanities: I wooed him with Shakespeare quotations, and he took my breath away with his readings of ancient Greek. It was true geek love. When we married, we each walked down the aisle solo and came back arm in arm. I kept my name, he kept his annual fishing trip, and we shared the wedding appliances and the home office.

But when it came to entering the job market, we had what’s known in academic parlance as a “two-body problem.” Securing two tenure-track jobs anywhere is hard. Finding them close together is nearly impossible.

Yet we pushed ahead. I applied to every position in early modern literature, and he applied to every one in the classics. Neither one of us was going to take a backseat or be pressured to follow the other. We were prepared to live apart as long as we stayed in the same time zone and there were direct flights.
The prospect of getting tenure in seven years, the academic freedom and job security at the end of it all, would make the personal and financial sacrifices worth it.

When our annual conventions rolled around, where the first round of interviews would take place, we each had four. Then it was on to the next stage — the campus visits.

Before my first visit, a professor of mine confided that a member of the interview team had contacted him about my candidacy and asked, “Is the husband going to be a problem?”

It was as if Brendon were a rabid pit bull. What were they really asking, though? If they offered me the position, would I try to negotiate one for him, too? Or would I crack under the pressure of living apart and jump ship mid-semester? Or would we do something really subversive, like starting a family before getting tenure?

I wish they had asked me directly, because I had the perfect comeback: “Not if I keep him chained under the bed.”

Instead, I had to rely on my professor’s response to my potential employer, which was that Brendon and I were both “adults” and would “make the right decision.” That is, we would put our careers ahead of our personal lives because this was the “adult” thing to do. We’d be like disciplined pro athletes, only without the money or the hard bodies.

For the first time since we’d met, Brendon and I weren’t equals. No one on his interview committees seemed to be sniffing around for info on his “problem” wife. Maybe they assumed that men put their careers first, or that women are less serious about theirs. It felt as if my wedding ring was a hurdle I had to clear to prove my commitment to academia, while Brendon’s was a badge of stability and good-guy gravitas.

I worked hard on my first campus fly-back to dispel the concern about my “problem” husband, making sure to slip in questions about real estate and school districts without seeming too eager to have children any time soon.

When the hiring season was over, we’d landed two good tenure-track jobs in two good cities with two airlines that flew directly between them. I dismissed the nagging concerns the process had raised for me and threw myself into divvying up the wedding platters. We pooled our moving allowances, packed up a Ryder truck in California, dropped half of our stuff in my new Midwestern city, then drove to his East Coast city and dropped off the other half. We had our car on a trailer behind the truck. This made backing up a treacherous proposition. For the whole 3,000 miles, one of us would jump out to scope the turnaround prospects whenever we were about to pull off. The literature scholar in me loved the metaphor: There was no going back.

Somehow we managed to have a child two years later, and, even though I hadn’t waited until tenure, I believed I’d done it in the most “adult” way possible — i.e., without inconveniencing my students or colleagues or jeopardizing my progress toward writing my book, the gold standard for getting tenure.
http://www.nytimes.com

Display Separate Counts for Comments

In WordPress, there are three ways to respond to a post: you can leave a comment, leave a trackback, or just link to the post to create a pingback. When displaying all of the responses to your posts, it’s a good idea to separate the comments from the pingbacks and trackbacks. Uninterrupted comment threads are a pleasure to read, as are well-styled lists of pingbacks. This is an excellent way to improve the usability, organization, and stylishness of your comment areas.
In this DiW tutorial, you’ll learn how to separate your responses and display the comment count for each type. Here is a diagram to help visual the goal:

As you can see, separating these lists gives us a cleaner comments area, making things easier for everyone. Even better news is that we’re going to set it up in two steps. If you would rather group the pingbacks and trackbacks and just segregate the comments, just a few tweaks and you’re off to the races.
First let’s see how to separate everything, then explain the grouping of pingbacks and trackbacks before wrapping things up.

Step 1 – Display separate comments, pingbacks, and trackbacks
The first thing we need to do is separate the different response types. Fortunately, WordPress makes this very easy. First, open your them’s
single.php
file and use the following template tag to call your
comments.php
template:

comments_template('/comments.php',true);

This code will enable WordPress to segregate and count each of the different response types using the
$wp_query
object. Now let’s separate the comments, pingbacks, and trackbacks. In your
comments.php
file, use the following code as your comments loop:

<?php if (!empty($comments_by_type['comment'])) { ?>

Comments

<?php wp_list_comments('type=comment'); ?>

<?php } if (!empty($comments_by_type['pingback'])) { ?>

Pingbacks

<?php wp_list_comments('type=pingback'); ?>

<?php } if (!empty($comments_by_type['trackback'])) { ?>

Trackbacks

<?php wp_list_comments('type=trackback'); ?>

<?php } ?>

This symmetrical slice of code will output the following markup, assuming that the post actually has all three types of responses:

Comments

Comment #1 - Blah blah blah..

Comment #2 - Blah blah blah..

Comment #3 - Blah blah blah..

Pingbacks

Pingback #1 - Blah blah blah..

Pingback #2 - Blah blah blah..

Pingback #3 - Blah blah blah..

Trackbacks

Trackback #1 - Blah blah blah..

Trackback #2 - Blah blah blah..

Trackback #3 - Blah blah blah..

When one of the different response types doesn’t exist on the post, that section will simply be omitted from the markup, keeping things nice and clean.

Step 2 – Display separate response counts
Now, to display the count for each of these response types, we can call upon the
$wp_query
object to retrieve and echo the information:

<?php echo count($wp_query->comments_by_type['comments']); ?>
<?php echo count($wp_query->comments_by_type['pingback']); ?>
<?php echo count($wp_query->comments_by_type['trackback']); ?>

Each of these lines displays a number corresponding to a specific response type. These response counts may be integrated into our previous code to give us the final result:

<?php if (have_comments()) : global $wp_query; ?>

<?php comments_number('No Responses', 'One Response', '% Responses' ); ?>

<?php if (!empty($comments_by_type['comment'])) { ?>

<?php echo count($wp_query->comments_by_type['comment']); ?> Comments

<?php wp_list_comments('type=comment'); ?>

<?php } ?>
<?php if (!empty($comments_by_type['pingback'])) { ?>

<?php echo count($wp_query->comments_by_type['pingback']); ?> Pingbacks

<?php wp_list_comments('type=pingback'); ?>

<?php } ?>
<?php if (!empty($comments_by_type['trackback'])) { ?>

<?php echo count($wp_query->comments_by_type['trackback']); ?> Trackbacks

<?php wp_list_comments('type=trackback'); ?>

<?php } ?>

<?php else : // if there are no comments yet ?>

<?php if (comments_open()) : ?>

<?php else : ?>

<?php endif; ?>

<?php endif; ?>

That’s the magic bullet right there. Used as your comments loop, this code will display separate comments, pingbacks, and trackbacks, with each showing their respective number of responses in its heading. Notice we threw in some additional code there to make everything completely plug-n-play. Bottom line: slap it in and test it yourself. Should work perfectly for all WordPress 2.7 and better.

Separate comments from both pingbacks and trackbacks
Note that, alternately, you could segregate comments from both pingbacks and trackbacks, such that your comments display would show something like this:

To do this, we modify the comment loop (from Step 1 above) like so:

<?php if (!empty($comments_by_type['comment'])) { ?>

Comments

<?php wp_list_comments('type=comment'); ?>

<?php } if (!empty($comments_by_type['pings'])) { ?>

Pingbacks & Trackbacks

<?php wp_list_comments('type=pings'); ?>

<?php } ?>

Grouping the pingbacks and trackbacks is easy thanks to the “
pings
” parameter for the second
wp_list_comments
 loop. Then to display the count for our combined pingbacks and trackbacks, we insert the following snippet into our “Pingbacks & Trackbacks” heading (similar to Step 2 above):

<?php echo count($wp_query->comments_by_type['pings']); ?>

That’s all there is to it! Once you get everything in place and working properly, you’ll have some clean HTML canvas to paint with any CSS styles you wish. Sounds like a great way to spend some time ;)
http://digwp.com/

Pregnancy – How to get pregnant naturally 2010

Lisa Olson has written a book called miracle pregnancy that has touched the lives of millions of women who are the hope of ever had in turn given to the mothers.
